2024 Toyota Grand Highlander: What to Expect for Toyota’s Latest SUV
Toyota is expanding its SUV lineup to further meet the demands of car buyers. Arriving in fall 2023, the Toyota Grand Highlander offers more cargo space than the Sequoia –Toyota’s largest vehicle– while preserving the agility and affordability consumers expect from their midsize SUVs.
The 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander will arrive in three grades across three different powertrains – XLE, Limited, and Platinum. Pricing details have not been announced yet, but are expected to be revealed this summer.
Although it builds on the Highlander legacy, the Grand Highlander will be a new addition to the Toyota fleet. The vehicle was designed to answer two main consumer demands: interior comfort and electrification.
The Grand Highlander earns its name for its elongated body and impressive cargo space. In total, it provides 97.5 cubic feet of cargo space (21 cu. ft. with all seats up) and, as the brand claims, an adult-suitable third row.
Compared to its standard size, the Grand Highlander adds 6.5 inches of length to its exterior dimensions. Along with this boost in length and legroom, there’s an extra inch of headroom and an additional 2 inches of shoulder room versus the regular Highlander.
Under the hood, the Grand Highlander boasts just as impressive specs. Highlander was the first model in its segment to offer a hybrid powertrain in 2006, and Grand Highlander further expands on the brand’s electrification commitment, Toyota officials explain.
Three different powertrains are offered on the Grand Highlander, including two shared with the regular Highlander model. New for this nameplate is an all-wheel-drive-exclusive, 362-horsepower variant called Hybrid MAX.
Comfort shouldn’t come at a cost. At least, that’s what Toyota thinks, which is why the Grand Highlander offers two hybrid powertrains options to take you further on a tank of gas. Three powertrains options are offered in both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations: a 2.4L turbo gas engine, an efficient 2.5L hybrid, and an AWD-only 362-hp Hybrid MAX.
The hybrid efforts come as part of Toyota’s plan to move “beyond zero.” As a symbol of that promise, the 2024 Grand Highlander will be the second Toyota vehicle to sport the new “Beyond Zero” badge, after the all-new 2023 Prius, officials state.
Along with being cleaner for the environment and offering better mileage, the Hybrid MAX powertrain also makes for the most powerful mid-SUV Toyota yet. Offering 400 lb.-ft of torque and a 5,000 max towing capacity, the Grand Highlander is an ideal choice for weekend adventurers and families alike. Plus, with its available AWD capability, you can be sure of road confidence whether you’re tackling challenging terrain or navigating harsh weather conditions.
Across all powertrain options come three Drive Modes – Sport, Eco, and Normal. All-wheel-drive configurations pack on three additional modes for even more on and off-road capability – Mud & Sand, Rock & Dirt, and Snow.
Built on the same platform as its smaller sibling, Grand Highlander is a versatile ride made for everything from short urban commutes to long road trips. Its most attractive feature is its massive interior cabin.
The Toyota Grand Highlander offers 97.5 cubic feet of space with the seats folded down and a spacious adult-sized third row. Plus, with thoughtful storage areas throughout the cabin, its extra roomy interior ensures everyone has a space for all their belongings. To illustrate its roominess, the Grand Highlander can fit up to 7 carry-on suitcases, even with the third-row seats up.
But there’s more to the Grand Highlander than its space; this midsize SUV also features upscale details throughout. An available panoramic roof, heated and ventilated leather-trimmed seats, and stylish interior accents add to the luxury craftsmanship of the Grand Highlander.
Other interior conveniences include:
- 13 cup holders big enough for large water bottles
- 7 USB ports throughout the cabin
- Available heated steering wheel and power-folding mirrors
- Available heated and ventilated front and second-row seats
- Available 1,500-Watt power outlets
- Available hands-free power back door
Toyota’s latest models are always equipped to the highest degree, and the Grand Highlander is no exception. Front and center is a 12.3-inch Toyota Audio Multimedia system that makes it easy for hands-free connectivity.
Drivers can control features throughout the cabin by using voice commands or through its intuitive touchscreen. Additionally, with the available Connected Service Drive Connect, drivers have access to Intelligent Assistant, Cloud Navigation, and Destination Assist. These features make it easy to change cabin temperature, search for directions, and stay up-to-date with the latest traffic and routing information.
Some of the tech features available on the 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander include:
- Over-the-Air (OTA) updates
- Apple Carplay & Android Auto
- Available Wi-Fi Connect 1-month trial that offers 4G connectivity for up to five devices
And, for those looking for an enhanced audio experience, Grand Highlander offers an available 11-speaker JBL Premium Audio system (standard on Limited and Platinum grades.)
Safety remains a top priority for Toyota. The 2024 Grand Highlander offers the latest Toyota Safety Sense, TSS 3.0. Some of the features included in this are:
- Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection
- Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist
- Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
- Lane Tracing Assist
- Road Sign Assist
- Automatic High Beams
New to this generation of TSS is Proactive Driving Assist, which uses the vehicle’s camera and radar to provide gentle braking and steering in support of safe driving. For instance, the vehicle will help maintain a safe distance behind bicyclists or other cars. Other features for TSS 3.0 have been enhanced through new system sensors and lane recognition.
Additionally, with the Toyota app, drivers can stay connected to their vehicle with a 1-year trial of Remote Connect service. Through this, users can lock or unlock the doors, check their vehicle’s status, and receive reminder notifications. Plus, when you buy at United Toyota Imperial, your vehicle is covered under our Never Ending Warranty.
