2023 Toyota Prius: Most Fuel-Efficient Prius Yet
If saving money is on your list of New Year’s resolutions, you may want to consider Toyota’s latest rendition of the Prius. Now entering its fifth generation, the 2023 Toyota Prius arrives as the most fuel-efficient Prius yet, with a manufacturer rating of 57 MPG combined.
Other upgrades that accompany the new model year include a larger, higher-performing engine, available all-wheel drive, and advanced technology that goes the extra mile. The 2023 Prius is expected to arrive in dealerships early next year in LE, XLE, and Limited grades.
What’s New for 2023?
It’s rare for the first of something to be the best, but the Prius doesn’t abide by rules. Introduced in 1997, the Prius was the world’s first-ever mass-produced hybrid vehicle, and its debut ushered in a new segment of vehicles that would forever change the automotive industry. Over 25 years later, the Prius continues its reign and ranks as the world’s top-selling hybrid car.
Keeping this legacy strong, the Japanese manufacturer has created the newest generation of the Prius. Some changes for the 2023 model year include:
Upgraded fuel economy: The eco- and wallet-friendly fuel efficiency that drivers know and love just got better. The 2023 Toyota Prius offers up to 57 MPG combined on LE models, the best-ever for a Prius and the most fuel-efficient hybrid in production for model year 2023.
Higher-performing hybrid system: A hallmark of this new generation is its updated hybrid engine that delivers 60 percent more horsepower. Underneath the hood, the 2023 Prius sports a 2.0L 4-cylinder engine with up to 194 horsepower, making it powerful enough to go from 0-60 mph in 7.2 seconds.
On-Demand All-Wheel Drive: Challenging road conditions pose no problem for the 2023 Prius. Available electric on-demand all-wheel drive makes slick, icy, or bumpy terrain a breeze as it delivers precise electronic control of the front-rear torque. With this system, the torque of the rear motor has also increased, offering a 50 percent improvement from its predecessor.
Stylish Exterior: The 2023 Prius is the first Toyota to sport the brand’s new “Beyond Zero” badging. According to Toyota, there are also a few Easter eggs, both inside and out, that include the Prius name and other phrases for drivers to find.
The 2023 Toyota Prius will be available in six color choices: Wind Chill Pearl, Cutting Edge, Guardian Gray, Midnight Black Metallic, Supersonic Red, or Reservoir Blue. Like all new Toyota models, the 2023 Prius comes with ToyotaCare, a two-year no-cost maintenance and roadside assistance plan.
Designed in Japan and built on the second-generation TNGA-C platform, the all-new Prius offers a style that is future-orientated from the inside out. With a lowered roofline and larger wheels, it sports a more athletic look that adds to its modern flair.
New for the 2023 model year is an available glass roof that brightens the cabin as you cruise the streets. Compared to its previous generation, the 2023 Prius offers a reduced weight and increased rigidity, delivering a smooth yet nimble ride.
It wouldn’t be a new Toyota generation without some added power and performance. Under the hood, the 2023 Prius offers a larger 2.0L engine and a revised hybrid system. Compared to the previous generation, it delivers over 60 percent more horsepower, climbing to 196 net horsepower on AWD-equipped models. Maximum engine torque also improves for the new model year with a 16 percent boost on all models.
Other improvements to know include:
- Improved regenerative braking to maximize fuel economy
- Active hydraulic booster to improve pedal feel and feedback
- Brake Hold that engages while waiting at a traffic light to reduce driver effort
- Three drive modes – Normal, Eco, and Sport – that tailor the vehicle to fit any road conditions
Interior & Tech
The new era of Prius arrives with some interior updates. To start, the all-new sedan features a cleaner, more modern look that aligns with Toyota’s future-orientated design philosophy. Similarly, the Prius provides advanced driving technology that maximizes driver’s comfort and convenience.
A new multi-information display is mounted directly in front of the driver to help keep them alert, and a multimedia touchscreen is located within easy reach.
Designed to keep passengers as comfortable as possible, the Prius features improved seating construction. A new seating shape reduces pressure, making it more comfortable for the driver and passengers. To add to this, XLE grades include standard heated seats, while the Limited grade adds standard heated and cooled seats, with optional heated rear seats.
Other interior features of the 2023 Prius include:
- 20.3 cu. ft. of cargo capacity
- Standard Toyota Safety Sense 3.0.
- 60/40 split-fold rear seating
- Available 8-speaker JBL Premium Audio system
- Available Remote Connect
