2023 Toyota Highlander Guide Tow Capacity MSRP Specs

The midsize SUV segment is a competitive market, but not for the Toyota Highlander. For six years running, it’s been the No. 1 seller, and for good reason. Drivers across the country trust the Highlander for its undeniable reliability, versatile cabin, and dynamic performance.

Now, for its new model year, the 2023 Toyota Highlander swabs its V6 on gas models for an all-new engine. Other upgrades like larger multimedia screens and improved convenience features also arrive across all grades and powertrains.

What’s New for 2023?

Most notably, this year’s Highlander features a new engine. For gas models only, the standard V6 has been replaced with a new turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder. The new engine makes 265 horsepower and 309 lb-ft of torque. Compared to its predecessor, that’s a whopping 17% increase in torque, making for better everyday responsiveness. Along with this change, some other upgrades have been made, including:

  • New Cypress exterior color
  • Improved wireless charger location
  • Larger 12.3-inch screens for Limited and Platinum models
  • Standard power-folding exterior mirrors for Limited and Platinum models
  • Exclusive all-black 20-inch wheels with all-season tires for XSE models
  • Hands-free power-operated rear liftgate for XLE and XSE models

The midsize SUV is expected to go on sale nationwide soon. Official dates have yet to be announced, but we expect the 2023 Highlander to arrive in Imperial, CA towards the end of the year. Pricing has also not yet been announced, but it is anticipated to start around $36,500 with the highest trim costing about $50,000.

Many drivers love the Highlander for its versatility. Not only is it a great vehicle for commutes to work or family errands, but it can be also used for weekend road trips and outdoor fun. The 2023 Highlander turbo models are equipped with a 5,000-lb towing capacity. These models also include Trailer Sway Control to help control unwanted trailer movement. Additionally, these models use a Stop and Start Engine System which helps reduce fuel consumption and emissions.

Impressive Performance and Powertrain

Toyota is committed to efficiency and bringing its customers the best driving experience possible. That’s why for this model year, the 2023 Highlander improves upon its engine. Now gas model Highlanders are equipped with a higher-torque, high-efficiency turbocharged powertrain. This helpful change will be noticeable to drivers in everyday driving situations, especially when the vehicle is full of passengers or cargo.

Just as important, fuel efficiency remains the same as last year’s model. The 2023 Toyota Highlander has an estimated fuel economy of 24 MPG combined. Another bonus, the new engine is more environmentally friendly with an over 50% reduction in NOx and NMOG.

Captivating Good Looks

The Highlander commands presence on the road. Built with a balance of power and refinement, its striking look is hard-to-ignore. Last year marked the debut of the Highlander Hybrid Bronze, which quickly grew to be a fan favorite trim. The 2023 Highlander will be available in eight exterior colors, as well as the exclusive Cement color only available on the Hybrid Bronze.

The Highlander’s style is one of practicality, too. Standard LED headlights provide a crisp, clean light, while available auto-leveling LED beams help keep the light aimed down at the road for better visibility. On XSE and XLE models is a hands-free power liftgate, which allows drivers to open the truck, even with their hands full.

For those wanting to maximize the Highlander’s potential, they may want to look into the Highlander XSE. New for 2023, the XSE will ride on exclusive all-black 20-inch wheels. All-season tires also come standard on the XSE. Similarly, the XSE includes specially-tuned suspension, low-friction shock absorbers, and electric power steering for a distinctly sporty feel.

XSE-exclusive styling rounds out the trim with unique headlamps, grille, front fascia, black roof rails, and black mirror caps.

Upscale Interior

The Highlander is quality inside and out. Its modern-inspired SofTex-trimmed seats make it not only comfortable and stylish but functional too. Convenience features also amplify the Highlander’s upscale feel. To name a few, the Highlander has two interior 120V/1,500-watt outlets, foldable seating, and an available Panoramic Moonroof.

No need to worry about space either. With all seat rows in use, Highlander offers 16 cu. ft of space behind the third row. This number expands to 48.4 cu. ft. when the third row is folded down. With both the second and third-row seats down, there is an impressive 84.3 cu. ft of space. The versatile cargo area makes the most of the additional length with various pockets and compartments throughout the vehicle.

On L and LE grades, the midsize SUV comes standard with second-row bench seating for eight. The XLE and Limited models swap that for a standard Captain’s Chair, though buyers can still choose a second-row bench as an option.
