023 Toyota Sequoia Full Size SUV

Toyota’s full-size, three-row SUV enters its third generation with the all-new 2023 Toyota Sequoia. Built on the same platform as the 2022 Tundra, the revamped Sequoia represents strength, longevity, and undisputable power – the same qualities of the coastal redwoods it’s named after.

The 2023 Sequoia is expected to arrive in showrooms this summer in 5 grades – SR5, Limited, Platinum, TRD Pro, and the new-to-Sequoia Capstone grade.

What’s New: Hybrid Powertrain, Towing, and More

One of the biggest changes to the new Sequoia is what’s under the hood. All trims of the 2023 Sequoia come standard with a Hybrid i-FORCE MAX powertrain. You may recognize this powerhouse engine, as it’s the same one used on the all-new 2022 Tundra. Designed to offer the best in power and efficiency, the hybrid powertrain produces 437 horsepower and 583 lb.-ft of torque. Compared to the previous generation’s V-8 engine, that’s an extra 15% in horsepower and nearly 45% boost in torque.

But the new hybrid engine isn’t just big on power. It’s also designed to provide drivers with what they need most: performance and efficiency. Fuel economy estimates are not available at this time, but Toyota expects the output to be extremely competitive at the top of its segment. To put that into perspective, segment leaders with hybrid options have average fuel economy ratings of 17 MPG city and 22 MPG highway. We can expect official ratings to be announced within the next coming months.

When designing the latest generation, Toyota paid attention to the demand of drivers. Since full-size SUVs need to do it all, towing was high on that list. This is why the all-new Sequoia offers an impressive 9,000-pound maximum towing capacity – a 22% increase from the prior generation.  Similarly, there is an available Tow Tech package on all grades, though it comes standard on TRD Pro and Capstone. With this, drivers can tow without trouble thanks to features like Trailer Backup Guide, which helps back up the SUV, and Straight Path Assist, which helps provide steering control.

The redesigned SUV will be offered in 2WD or an available part-time 4WD system. The one exception is the TRD Pro, which will only be offered in 4WD.

Exterior

The full-size SUV segment is a competitive lot. That means the Sequoia needs to be able to handle a multitude of tasks – and be the best at it. Built with this in mind, the all-new SUV features a modern body-on-frame chassis that shares architecture with the Tundra and widely-coveted Land Cruiser. With this platform, the Sequoia provides excellent handling, supreme comfort, and gripping capability.

This next-generation frame improves ride comfort by utilizing new design techniques. New laser welding technology ensures the SUV is reinforced in areas that need it most, and in areas where it’s not, the mass and weight are reduced. The Sequoia also features independent front suspension and adopts a new rack-mounted electronic power steering system. Together, these features create an ultra-smooth riding and handling experience. And for those looking to tow regularly, a modern multi-link rear suspension opens the door for the available Load-Leveling Rear Height Control Air Suspension and Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS).

The 2023 Toyota Sequoia will be offered in a wide variety of colors, including 10 available shades, 3 premium colors, and the TRD-exclusive Solar Octane.

Toyota Seqouia Interior

Interior

Luxurious inside and out, the 2023 Sequoia doesn’t cut corners anywhere. For families or adventurers who need space (and don’t want to compromise style), the all-new SUV is a fitting choice. With the Sequoia, there’s a range of configurations for seating and cargo. Depending on the grade, second-row passengers get bench seating or a captain’s chair. Regardless, both choices have the ability to recline or fold down for larger cargo space if needed. Similarly, the third-row also benefits passengers with the class-exclusive Sliding Third Row and Adjustable Cargo Shelf System. With this segment-first, the third row can slide 6 inches of adjustment range. It can also fold down to complement different storage positions.

Official dimensions have yet to be released, but the next generation is expected to be slightly larger than its predecessor. The outgoing model currently offers 120 cubic feet of cargo space.

Safety and Technology

Like most models on the Toyota lineup, the Sequoia comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense. This suite of technology is designed to keep you and your passengers safe by using a system of high-resolution cameras and radar technology. With features like Pre-Collision System, Lane Departure Alert, and Road Sign Assist, drivers can feel more confident on the road knowing that their vehicle will lend a helping hand if needed.

Unique to the Sequoia is its Panoramic View Monitor. Using a series of cameras, drivers can see all angles of the full-size SUV on the available 14-inch touchscreen. Those towing will also appreciate the top-down view of the vehicle and a hitch view to assist with trailer connection. Additionally, there are available extending and retracting tow mirrors that can provide added peace of mind when pulling a trailer.

Along with a plethora of safety features, the next-generation SUV is loaded with technology and entertainment upgrades. One of these features is the new multimedia system. A large 8-inch or available 14-inch touchscreen controls the all-new Toyota Audio Multimedia system. This technology offers an upgraded user experience with new touch and voice activation. Akin to Amazon’s Alexa, the Toyota Audio Multimedia system can be activated with a simple phrase like, “Hey Toyota.” Through this, drivers can search for directions, adjust audio controls or cabin temperature, and more all hands-free. It also supports standard wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto.
