What’s New for 2022?Â
For its 2022 rendition, the Camry gains a Nightshade trim for the hybrid model, as well as new exterior paints. In Toyota’s language, Nightshade refers to trims that feature black wheels, accents, and badging. For the Camry SE Hybrid Nightshade, that means 18-inch black wheels, a black shark-fin antenna, black window trim, and mirror caps. Previously, this option was only available on non-hybrid Camrys.Â
Additionally, last year’s exclusive Ice Edge color will join the lineup of available paints for non-TRD trims. Instead, the TRD this year will get its own exclusive color: two-tone Cavalry Blue with a Midnight Black Metallic roof.
All powertrain options for the 2022 Camry will carry over from its 2021 model.Â
Hybrid Powertrain
The Camry Hybrid powertrain is the most powerful and efficient system offered on the Camry yet. The Toyota Hybrid System (THS II) combines the output of the 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with two motors, one being electric. In the hybrid, the gas engine is tuned to produce 176 horsepower. Paired with the 118 horsepower electric motor, the total Hybrid system net output is 208 horsepower.Â
On hybrid models, the lithium-ion battery pack is thoughtfully installed beneath the rear seat as to not reduce passenger room or trunk capacity. Drive system modes on the Hybrid include Normal, Eco, EV, and a Sport mode that improves acceleration response. With this system, the 2022 Toyota Camry LE Hybrid gets an estimated 51 MPG city and 53 MPG highway. Other hybrid trims vary with an average 45 MPG city and 50 MPG highway.
V6 Powertrain
The TRD stamp of strength was initially only seen on off-road-ready models like the Tundra and 4Runner. Yet in 2020, the TRD platform joined the Camry’s lineup, and this road-tamer continues for 2022. V6 trims boast a direct-injected, 301-horsepower DOHC 3.5-liter V-6. This engine is teamed with a Direct-Shift eight-speed automatic transmission featuring sport mode and paddle shifters.
Gas Powertrain
Like its V6 counterpart, Camry gas grades equipped with a 2.5-liter engine also team with a Direct Shift eight-speed automatic transmission. Together the two deliver crisp-yet-smooth, rapid shifting that defines Toyota’s quality and performance.Â
2022 Camry Trim Configurations
All Camry models come standard with the advanced Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ (TSS-2.5+) system. Drive safe around Imperial Valley with features like Pedestrian Detection, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert, Automatic High Beams, and Lane Tracing Assist.Â
Along with its industry-leading safety features, each Camry adds on unique upgrades that are fit for every lifestyle. The following trims come in both FWD and AWD configurations, as well as a V6 option on the XLE, XSE, and TRD.Â
